Connecting Cables To Your Battery

When you begin jump-starting a battery, you need to make sure both vehicles are turned off and that both hoods are up so that you can access the battery posts. Starting with the dead battery, connect a red cable to the positive post. You'll then connect the other red cable to the other positive post on the good battery.

Next, connect the black end of the cable to the negative post on the good battery. Instead of connecting the other black end to the dead battery, you want to connect it to a metal surface that's not painted that's under the hood of the car.

Turn on the vehicle that has a good battery. After letting it run for a few minutes, you can usually start the other vehicle. Avoid trying to jump-start a vehicle for a long period of time as it can drain both batteries completely. While in South Burlington, VT, visit Autosaver MAX to have the battery that doesn't work properly replaced.
