Car Knowledge: What is a Blind Spot Monitor?

Here at Autosaver MAX, we try to keep our South Burlington, VT customers informed about their vehicles. Many newer vehicles come with a host of advanced safety features that provide everyone in the car with plenty of protection. One of the most popular safety features is a blind spot monitor, but what does it do? Let's find out!

A blind spot monitor is made with sensors that detect when a vehicle moves into your blind spot zones. If a vehicle is detected by the system, it will alert the driver not to change lanes. Most blind spot monitors come with audible and visual alerts. The visual alerts are typically flashing icons on the side mirrors.

Why do so many drivers like blind spot monitors? Because they reduce the risk of lane-change collisions. According to the IIHS, blind spot monitors reduced lane-change collision injuries by 23 percent and lane-change collision by 14 percent.
